Making changes to groups

By default, any of the group participants can change the subject, icon description or send messages. However, a group admin can change the group settings to allow only admins to edit the group info or send messages.

Changing the group settings

To change the group settings for editing group info:
  1. Go to the group in WhatsApp, then tap the subject of the group.
    • Alternatively, long press the group in the Chats tab > tap group info.
  2. Tap group settings > edit group info.
  3. Choose to allow all participants or only admins to edit the group info.
To change the group settings for sending messages:
  1. Go to the group in WhatsApp, then tap the subject of the group.
    • Alternatively, long press the group in the Chats tab > tap group info.
  2. Tap group settings > send messages.
  3. Choose to allow all participants or only admins to send messages.
Note: Participants can directly contact an admin by tapping admins in the group, then tapping the name of the admin they'd like to message.

Changing the group subject

To change the subject:
  1. Go to the group in WhatsApp, then tap the subject of the group.
    • Alternatively, long press the group in the Chats tab > tap group info.
  2. Tap subject.
  3. Enter a new subject, then tap accept.
    • The subject limit is 25 characters.
    • You can add emoji to your subject by clicking the emoji icon.

Changing the group icon

To change the icon:
  1. Go to the group in WhatsApp, then tap the subject of the group.
    • Alternatively, long press the group in the Chats tab > tap group info.
  2. Tap the group icon.
  3. Choose to take a photo, choose from albums or search web for a new image.
    • If you want to remove the current icon, tap remove > remove.
  4. Tap accept after you set the new icon.

Changing the group description

To change the description:
  1. Go to the group in WhatsApp, then tap the subject of the group.
    • Alternatively, long press the group in the Chats tab > tap group info.
  2. Tap description.
  3. Enter a new description, then tap accept.
    • The description limit is 512 characters.

Muting group notifications

You can mute group notifications for a specified period of time. You'll still receive messages sent to the group, but your phone won't notify you when they're received. To mute group notifications:
  1. Go to the group in WhatsApp, then tap the subject of the group.
    • Alternatively, long press the group in the Chats tab.
  2. Tap mute.
  3. Select the length of time you'd like to mute notifications for.
